Superheroes bring out a sense of comfort, especially for me. The movies take me out of my reality and bring me into their world. The one hero that I will always go back to is Spider-Man. He is my all-time favorite. He didn’t try too hard to seem cool and he stays true to himself, a kid. A superhero that many people can relate to.
My interest in Spider-Man started in middle school. My dad was an avid movie watcher, in turn I became one as well. We would always watch Marvel movies together. We watched the other genres on occasion but I never touched horror, ever. When the Spider-Man movies first came out, I fell in love with his character. I’d say I’m a movie fan than comic fan. I read the comics until this year. They interested me but they were never a priority.
Every Spider-Man movie is great in their own way. I love all three movie versions of him that Tobey, Andrew and Tom portrayed. It’s difficult to pick a favorite but we all have one that we kinda favor more. If I were to pick a favorite, it has to be Andrew’s. Although he wasn’t liked very much when his movies first came out, he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves.
It’s easy to be nit-picky when it comes to the movies, especially if you’re a comic reader. But since I’m not, I can watch the movies and have an open mind because I don’t have anything to compare it to. I just go into the theater and enjoy the movie for what it is, a superhero movie.
As for Andrew, he wasn’t always the happy go lucky Spider-Man people talk about in the comics. He was nerdy but not the kind readers are used to. That is exactly what put a ton of people off. He just didn’t seem like a right fit based on the comics. But I ate those movies up. Not only is Andrew very handsome but he played a Spider-Man that I fell for.
The funny thing is I am deeply afraid of spiders but I love Spider-Man. Everyone around me always thought that was strange. I even think it’s strange. He just always enticed me with the fact that he gets bit by one and gains its powers. Every time I get bit by a spider, I wonder if I would become Spider-woman. I can dream, right?
